Movement - Wellness - Housing

We define "home" in two distinct yet interconnected ways: the Body-Home and the Space-Home.

First, the Body-Home refers to the body as the vessel where the spirit resides. It is the place where our essence dwells. To nurture the Body-Home, we engage movement practices such as dance, capoeira, somatic exercises, and nature walks, alongside other wellness practices like basket weaving, medicine making, somatic exercises, regalia making, and beading. These movement and wellness practices are essential for caring for our physical selves, ensuring our bodies remain fine homes that house another vital aspect of who we are: our souls.

Second, the Space-Home refers to the physical spaces of belonging—community spaces, the land, and the places of residence in which we live—that fulfill our need for sanctuary. At Sequoia, we offer community gatherings and housing initiatives because we believe that safe, supportive spaces are fundamental to our overall well-being.

Additionally, we see ourselves as a manifestation of the Land Back movement, advocating for the return of land, space, and resources to Black and Native peoples in Atlanta. This advocacy is rooted in our deep connection to the land, grounded in both our indigeneity and stewardship of it.

We believe that nurturing both the Body-Home and the Space-Home, together and in harmony, is essential to human flourishing. When we care for ourselves and the spaces we inhabit, we create a foundation for collective wellness and growth.
